We are very happy to announce that another TEDx event is taking place in Romania in the idylic land of Reghin. The first edition is on July 13, 2011.

How did it all started?

You know that we have a true passion for spreading ideas, for TED and for the TEDx community. We are one of the oldest TEDx license in the world and the oldest still active in Romania.

Our founder, Vlad Fiscutean started to empower local leaders in different cities of our country to organize their own local TEDx events. The first breakthrough happened in April 2011 after more then one year of meetings and discussions with local leaders. A new TEDx event was born in the idylic land of Reghin — Internationally known as The City of Violins.

Why Reghin?

Because it’s a city with a very active community of people. It’s known world-wide for it’s amazing hand-crafted violins. It’s the kind of place that many would love to see and would fall in love with. It’s the place where art meets modern science. One of the very last places on earth where you can still find luthiers even today that combine the old art of making string instruments with the advantages of modern science.

What is the history of the city?

Reghin is a city and municipality in Mureş county in Romania, on the Mureş River in Transylvania. It is the place of origin of the Sasregen Hasidic Jewish dynasty. It has a population of approximately 35,700. Reghin was first mentioned in 1228 in a charter of Hungarian King Andrew II as Regun – however, evidence of its strategic location and defence system suggests that the town might have been considerably older.

Sorin Suciu — Licensee, Organizer
Born in Reghin, Sorin Suciu studied Management and Marketing at Dimitrie Cantemir University in Tirgu Mures and finished his study at West University in Timisoara then went to study The Management of Human Resources and Marketing at Politechnical University in Timisoara. He worked for six years with The Romanian Ministry of Finance until he decided to that it is time to build his own company. In two years his company, Transilvania Consultanta took part in a 16 million euro transaction.

Klaus Birthler – Organizer
Born in Reghin, Klaus Birthler studied Architecture, Urbanism and Territorial Planning at the University for Architecture “Ion Mincu”, Bucharest; Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and University of Fine Arts, Hamburg. He is now consulting the Reghin City Council on Architectural and Planning issues.

A partnership full of opportunities

TEDx Timişoara will remain involved in the event by supporting the community and sharing logistic resources, advice and know-how. This bridge between the Banat region and Transylvania is full of opportunities!

TEDster Vlad Fiscutean — licensee of TEDx Timisoara in Romania met with Ralph Talmont — one of the licensee of TEDx Warsaw in Poland to talk about his experience organizing the Poland event.

Media entrepreneur, publishing consultant and photographer Ralph Talmont —  a licensee of TEDxWarsaw in Poland, Europe is in love with Jazz, books, conversations and TED.

He’s been a TED fan for decades and jumped at the opportunity of organizing a TEDx event as soon as TED released the initiative. Along with six friends who now constitute the core organizing team and some 30 volunteers and collaborators, he has organized two editions of TEDxWarsaw and and several associated events and helped over 60 speakers spread their ideas.

TEDxWarsaw happens every year since March 2010 in the city of Warsaw in Poland. “Warsaw went through hell during World War II and then years of communist repression and dullness which followed“, Ralph says.

At the same time things are starting to go in the right direction for the beautifull and dynamic capital city due to the creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit of the younger generation being released and “TED is a big catalyst“.

A number of people have already created projects as a result of meeting at TEDxWarsaw and business initiatives have taken off. Ralph jokes that the only good thing that hasn’t happened yet is “attendees getting married as a result“. But as more then 1000 people have already attended, who knows what the future holds.

Ralph thinks that TEDx falls onto fertile ground in Poland because “the country has the highest entrepreneurial index (according to European Commission), a young generation full of open minds in search for ideas, it’s the 7^th largest economy of Europe, has the World’s second modern constitution and a great history“.

The first event, in 2010, was centered on fostering collaboration within the community, the second one in March 2011 had the theme “Looking in, Looking Out” for inspiration.

Organizing a TEDx event is “all hard and detail driven” but it helps if you have “a wicked ability to telescope — zoom in and out of broad brush overview and into minute detail”. “It’s hard work but worth the effort and I have met some extraordinary people”.

Ralph’s himself has two ideas worth spreading, a big one: “that everyone over forty has the duty to invest time in fostering young talent in their profession or business” and a smaller one “to get bridal couples to ask for school aids instead of bouquets at their wedding then donate them to a school or orphanage in need”.

On May 24, TED is holding the first-ever audition for TED Talks. It will take place in New York in front of a live audience made up of TED staff and members of the TED community.

The audition will be recorded, and the best talks could either be posted on TED.com or win an invitation for a full-on mainstage presentation at TED2012 in California early next year.

Make a one-minute video to qualify for this audition. Video deadline is April 25, 2011.

At TED2012, our whole theme will be devoted to this. We’re calling it “Full Spectrum” — the rich use of technologies, formats and styles to make an impact on an audience. And that’s what we’ll be looking for in this audition.

How to apply

1. Create a one-minute video to indicate your idea for a Full Spectrum presentation, using any of the above techniques or something brand-new. Tell us what you’ll talk about, and then show us how you’ll do it in Full Spectrum style. We’re looking for powerful presentation ideas — the video itself doesn’t need to be polished, it’s only for our internal review. It just needs to give us a sense of you and demonstrate that your presentation could have impact.

2. Upload your video to YouTube or Vimeo.

3. Then fill out this online entry form and give us your details, including a link to the video. IMPORTANT: Forms are due April 25, 2011, at 11:59pm Eastern time.
